  I've been studying with JW's for a few months..

  i've been studying with the jw's for a few months and i've attended a few meetings but things are feeling somewhat strange...i don't quite get the jist of things but i feel that i'm learning more of what the watchtower teachers and less of what the bible actually says.. i never open my bible.. i'm always reading the watchtower pamphlets.

  i really like the people i've met in the congregation and the guy thats been doing the studies with me has been an awesome friend.. .

  but i'm just having some issues.. i mean.. they translated their own bible to suit their own doctrines it seems.

  Michael,

  No harm meant toward your buddy....he sounds like an ass. He is "bait and switch." The bait is his friendship and the switch is you becomming a JW: would boost his, already, inflated ego a lot...

  You don't need THIS discussion: you need to widen your circle of friends. You need some people to broden your opportunities of relationships. The JWs are the LAST people to do this with: total fakery.

  I would recommend reaching out in your area by getting involved with some "help your neighbor" groups. You seem, in your posts, real sincere and like-able. Reach out to others. Perhaps, you are a bit reserved...shy....

  It would require effort and risk :well worth both for friendships that are built on MUTUAL respect and admiration.

  That is my take.

  Just tell your buddy you want to put your study "on hold." Back off the religious discussions. Reach out in other directions...there are so, so many.

  Spend some time on this board. Continue your spirital Journey, not just with the JWs, but, Christianity generally.

  Michael,

  So.......this guy has befriended you. That is good. He is a "father" type roll model. Ok....

  Now, we are talking spiritual issues.....

  The JW idea of "truth" will NOT stand in an open debate. Your friend will be proved in error on at least five different points. It is predictive. The JWs are simply wrong. That is that......

  Do you want that to happen? Do you want you buddy's position eviserated? How will that effect your relationship with him?

  i thought it might be nice to see some positive things mentioned about jw's.

  now, i know mentioning these things may be hard given the experiences here, but i've yet to find a group of people who don't have something positive about them.

  if there weren't something positive, no one would ever join.

  Michael,

  See what you can do to set it up. I can arrange my time to match yours....need a few days to arrange things at work....

  PM me with time and date so I will be sure and get it.

  Also, we will need to talk, first.

  I doubt he will do it. The man sounds like a blow-hard. Time and circumstance will tell.

  Again, make the arrangements and we will see how this "study" goes...not normally for him, no doubt...

  Michael,

  Look.....these guys are good at arguement. Better than you. You are not going to "win." Period.

  Ask your conductor this: "I have a new friend that has agreed to discuss a couple of topics by phone. Let us set up a speaker phone and have a discussion with him."

  Say that and see what he says.

  You will have, no doubt, a few volunteers. I would be one.

  Witness "Terminology"

  i find it interesting reading posts from ex-witnesses or those that are slipping away and yet the terminology is still brain-washed into us.

  i mean, i've managed to stop using the terms myself.

  sometimes i might catch myself using the term "the truth" or "brother" or "sister", but i quickly correct myself.. the fact is for me, as much as i agree with a lot of their values and beliefs, those people were not my "brothers and sisters" nor was the organization "the truth".

  There is a vocabulary for all professions.

  The JWs have a vocabulary that is used by those here as "reference points" of understanding. Not only does the word carry a fix meaning, but, there is an emotional sense attached to it as well. So, when I say "the brothers" it puts my statement into an emotional as well as fact based set of circumstances.

  Also, it allows "new ones" to the baord to feel comfortable with familiar language.

  Life Sure Is Great!

  nothing spectacular going on, just hanging out with my siblings and neice....talking, watching t.v., and reminiscing about when we were little.

  just taking in this moment and enjoying it for all it's worth with the people i love most in the world.

  i've learned recently that there's nothing better than living in the present.

  This group is a not "nutrient" they are poison and weed and bug to a person's spiritual "garden."

  The JWs bring bad advice, hypocrasy, lies, deciet, family division, irationality, myth as fact, historical re-writes, bad health advice, doctrines of men that are spiritual insane....

  There is no good, here, John...none at all. This is delusional nutty-ness dressed up in a tux....no not even a tux.....a mid seventies poly suit.......wide tie and all......

  I live in a rural area. Chickens pick little bits and pieces of "treats" out of fresh cow patties.

  Mind Control? or just usual group processes?

  i have limited knowledge about mind control from the psychology degree i have just finished.

  i had been unhappy with my life as a witno for a long time but one particular lecture really pushed me to the point of leaving and after that lecture i never returned to the meetings.

  the lecture was on brain washing tactics employed in the military, there were so many points that struck a chord with me.
